Central European University (CEU)

Central European University (CEU) is a private university founded in 1991 by George Soros. It began with programmes in Prague and Budapest, and Budapest became its main campus by 1995. After Hungarian legislation of April 2017 restricted its academic freedom, CEU moved its main campus and administration to Vienna, Austria, in 2019. Its bachelor's, master's and doctoral programmes are now taught in Vienna.

The Budapest site, at Nádor utca 15, continues as the base for CEU's research and non-degree activities: the CEU Democracy Institute, the Institute for Advanced Study, the CEU Summer University and the Blinken Open Society Archives (OSA), located at Arany János utca 32. It also hosts non-degree teaching, academic exchange and civic engagement.

All CEU programmes are taught in English, in the social sciences, humanities, law, data science, political science and public policy. All degree programmes are accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) in the United States and by AQ Austria:

  • Three bachelor's programmes, completed in three or four years
  • Master's programmes of one or two years, full-time or part-time
  • Eleven doctoral programmes
  • Advanced certificate and non-degree programmes

Graduate programmes

CEU's master's programmes are taught in English on its Vienna campus, with one-year and two-year, full-time and part-time options. Fields include:

  • Economics, business data analytics and finance
  • Environmental sciences and policy
  • Gender studies
  • Historical studies and museum studies
  • International relations
  • Human rights and legal studies (MA and LLM)
  • Political science, public policy and public administration
  • Philosophy, sociology and social anthropology, and social data science

CEU also offers 11 doctoral programmes, among them cognitive science, comparative history, economics, network science, political science and a doctorate in juridical science.

Accreditation

On June 21, 2004, the Hungarian Parliament had passed the Act No. LXI. to establish a Hungarian private higher education institution under the name Közép-európai Egyetem (Central European University) -- the act came into force on April 1, 2005 (published in Magyar Közlöny No. 42/2005), meaning full Hungarian accreditation.
