The Universidad de Huelva (UHU) was created on 1 July 1993 by an Andalusian law, together with the universities of Almería and Jaén, and belongs to the Andalusian public university system. Its roots in Huelva go back to the Escuela Normal (1859) and the Escuela de Minas (1901). It has four campuses, including El Carmen and La Merced, and has trained about 50,000 graduates.
Teaching takes place in nine centres: the Higher Technical School of Engineering and the faculties of Education, Psychology and Sports Sciences; Nursing; Labour Sciences; Business and Tourism; Experimental Sciences; Law; Humanities; and Social Work. Besides bachelor's degrees and double degrees, the UHU offers official master's degrees, 23 own qualifications (títulos propios) and 11 doctoral programmes, and its Modern Languages Service runs language courses. Research is carried out by 95 research groups and 8 research centres.
The UHU is one of the ten members of PIONEER, a European university alliance. Its Accommodation Office lists flats for rent, runs a programme in which older people offer students free housing in exchange for help and company, and provides information on the Loop Homes El Carmen residence on the El Carmen campus.
