Federation University Australia is a university and TAFE (vocational education) provider in regional Victoria, Australia. It began as the School of Mines in Ballarat in 1870 and has campuses in Ballarat (including Mt Helen), Berwick, Gippsland, the Wimmera and Melbourne City. Its CRICOS provider number is 00103D. The university states that it has produced over 123,000 graduates and that it was ranked #175 in the Times Higher Education Young University Rankings 2024.
Federation offers pathway, undergraduate, postgraduate coursework, research, TAFE and short courses. It describes itself as a co-operative university: through its Co-op model, students complete work placements, cadetships or research internships that count toward their course.
A dedicated international student team helps with relocation, enrolment and settling in. International applicants are automatically assessed for seven scholarships, and students living on campus can receive 50% off the student residence fee. Most international applicants apply through StudyLink or a Federation agent; applications for 2027 are open.
