Fort Hays State University (FHSU) is a regional public university in Hays, Kansas, in the Great Plains of the American Midwest, located halfway between Kansas City and Denver. It was founded in 1902 as the Western Branch of Kansas State Normal School and is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. For autumn 2025 the university reports 12,849 registered students: 3,908 on campus, 8,195 online and 4,418 through its International Partnership Program.

FHSU offers more than 70 undergraduate degree programmes on campus, as well as graduate programmes, and more than 200 degree and certificate programmes online through FHSU Online. The Office of Global Affairs and International Student Services handles international admissions, student services, study abroad and international partnerships.

International applicants can enrol as on-campus or online degree-seeking students, as non-degree students or, for high school juniors and seniors, in the residential Academy of Mathematics and Science (AMS). Applicants below the English requirement can follow the online Intensive English Program of The Language Company (TLC). Once admitted, international students can apply for scholarships.

Admission Requirements

International undergraduates apply through the online application portal and pay a non-refundable US$50 application fee. Required documents:

  • Clear copy of the passport ID page
  • Official English test scores sent directly by the testing company
  • Official transcripts in English, or with a word-by-word translation by a NACES member
  • Minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale (2.0 for transfers with at least 24 US credit hours)
  • International Student Financial Data and I-20 Request Form with a certified bank statement covering one year of study

Transfer of international credit requires a course-by-course evaluation by a NACES member.

Language Requirements

Minimum English scores (undergraduate / graduate):

  • TOEFL iBT: 61 / 79
  • IELTS: 5.5 / 6.5
  • iTEP: 3.6 / 3.9
  • Duolingo: 95 / 110
  • The Language Company (TLC): Level 9 / Level 9 plus two Advanced English modules

Applicants whose native language is English, or with 24+ credits from an accredited US institution, are exempt. Institutional TOEFL and TOEFL Essentials are not accepted.
