The University of Kansas (KU) is a public research university governed by the Kansas Board of Regents. Its main campus is on Mount Oread in Lawrence, Kansas, a city of about 95,000 people some 45 minutes by car from Kansas City International Airport; KU also has campuses and sites in Overland Park, Kansas City, Wichita, Salina and Leavenworth. KU is one of 38 public institutions that are members of the Association of American Universities (AAU). In fall 2026 it reported a record enrolment of 31,464 students, with students from 114 countries and a student-to-faculty ratio of 18 to 1.

KU offers more than 400 degree and certificate programmes, from bachelor's to master's and PhD level, plus professional education in medicine and law, continuing education and online degrees. According to the university, U.S. News & World Report ranks its School of Nursing 14th, School of Business 44th and School of Engineering 52nd among public universities.

International students are supported by KU International Support Services (ISS), which handles admission guidance, English proficiency information and I-20/DS-2019 visa documents. KU also runs an Intensive English Program for students who need to improve their English before or alongside their studies.
