Washburn University is a public university in Topeka, the capital of Kansas, a city of about 127,000 residents. It was founded in 1865 by members of the Congregational Church and became a municipal university in 1941; today it describes itself as publicly funded and independently governed. Washburn has just over 7,000 students on its main campus at 17th Street and College Avenue, which is also home to the School of Law, and at the Washburn Tech campus. According to the university, it hosts more than 300 students from 41 countries.

Washburn offers more than 200 academic programmes, including bachelor's and associate degrees and certificates through the College of Arts and Sciences and the Schools of Applied Studies, Business and Nursing, as well as master's degrees, a Doctor of Nursing Practice and law degrees.

International Student Services supports students from the application through visa documents to arrival and campus life. International applicants use the International Online Application and send financial documents, transcripts, a recent English test score and a passport copy. Applicants with low English scores can first be admitted to the Intensive English Program, which also accepts students who only want to study English.
