Kansas State University (K-State) is a land-grant university in Kansas and, according to the university, the first operational land-grant university in the United States. Its flagship campus in Manhattan, Kansas, was established in 1863; there are two more campuses, in Salina and in Olathe in the Greater Kansas City area, plus online courses through K-State Online.

K-State offers more than 250 undergraduate programmes, more than 165 graduate programmes, including master's degrees and PhDs through the Graduate School, and more than 150 online programmes. The university reports more than 2,000 international students, scholars and faculty from over 100 countries.

International undergraduates apply through the K-State application or the Common App. English proficiency is not required for admission: students who cannot prove it take courses in the university's English Language Program, which also accepts English-only students. International Student and Scholar Services provides immigration services for students and scholars.

More than 250 undergraduate majors and programmes on the Manhattan, Salina and Olathe campuses, and more than 150 online programmes and microcredentials through K-State Online.

The English Language Program offers intensive English courses, also for English-only students aged 17 or over who are non-native speakers.

Admission Requirements

International applicants (anyone who is not a US citizen or permanent resident) apply online through the K-State application or the Common App. Graduate applicants apply through the Graduate School, which sets the requirements and deadlines of each programme.

English-only applicants to the English Language Program complete the online form, pay an US$80 application fee, send a copy of their passport and an Affidavit of Financial Support.

Language Requirements

English proficiency is not required for admission, but must be shown before enrolling in academic courses (scores no older than 2 years), for example:

  • TOEFL iBT: 79 (tests before 21 January 2026) or 4.5 (tests from 21 January 2026)
  • IELTS: 6.5
  • Duolingo English Test: 110
  • PTE: 53
  • Cambridge C1 Advanced: grade A, B or C

Other students take the WildCAT or EPT placement test and are placed in Basic, Intermediate or Advanced courses of the English Language Program.
