George Mason University is a public research university established by the Commonwealth of Virginia; it describes itself as Virginia's largest public research university. Its main campus is in Fairfax, about 20 miles from Washington, D.C. (United States), with further campuses at Mason Square and SciTech and in South Korea (Mason Korea). More than 40,000 students from all 50 states and 130 countries attend, and the university is classified R1.

Ten colleges and schools offer more than 200 degree and certificate programmes at bachelor's, master's and doctoral level, including master's programmes in artificial intelligence and in quantum science and engineering. The Smithsonian-Mason School of Conservation teaches conservation with Smithsonian scientists.

International first-year applicants use the Common App or Mason's own application and may apply score optional. Minimum English scores for undergraduates include IELTS 6.5 and Duolingo 110; the Gateway programme offers English instruction. International students are not eligible for US federal aid, but merit scholarships are available for international first-year and transfer students on F-1 visas.

Bachelor's degrees are offered by George Mason's 10 colleges and schools, covering all academic areas, with the option to design an individual course of study. Features include accelerated and dual degree programmes, the Honors College, undergraduate research at an R1 university and the Smithsonian-Mason School of Conservation. George Mason established Virginia's first School of Computing and first College of Public Health. Some majors, such as Computer Science and Engineering, have additional requirements.

George Mason offers more than 130 graduate degree programmes and more than 100 graduate certificates. Distinctive programmes include Virginia's first master's degrees in artificial intelligence and in quantum science and engineering, and Virginia's first public PhD in robotics. Graduate applicants for most programmes need TOEFL 5.0 (88 before 21 January 2026), IELTS 7.0 or Duolingo 120.

Admission Requirements

International applicants submit the application for their student type (first-year, transfer or graduate) plus international elements; some need a student visa and health insurance. First-year requirements:

  • Common App or Mason's own application, with application fee
  • Certified official transcripts from all secondary schools and results of leaving or entrance exams, with certified English translation
  • SAT or ACT scores, or a Score Optional application
  • Proof of English proficiency
  • Two recommended letters (counselor and teacher) and an optional essay of about 250 words

Applications are reviewed holistically; some majors have extra requirements.

Language Requirements

All applicants must show English proficiency (scores no older than two years). Minimum scores:

  • Undergraduate: TOEFL 4.5 with 4.0 per section (tests from 21 January 2026) or 80 with 18 per section (earlier tests); IELTS 6.5 with 6.0 per section; Duolingo 110; PTE Academic 59
  • Graduate: TOEFL 5.0 with 4.5 per section (or 88 with 20 per section); IELTS 7.0 with 6.5 per section; Duolingo 120; PTE 67
  • College of Engineering and Computing: IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 4.5 (80), no section minimums

Waivers apply, for example, to graduates of IB or UK-curriculum schools and of schools in waiver-eligible countries. TOEFL code: 5827. The Gateway programme offers English instruction.

Financial Aid

Non-US citizens and non-residents are not eligible for US federal financial aid, but internal and external scholarships and loan options exist. George Mason offers a limited number of merit-based scholarships to international first-year and transfer students studying full time on an F-1 visa, renewable for up to four years (first-year) or two years (transfer). All admitted applicants are considered automatically, with no separate application; awards are announced in the acceptance letter.
