Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) is a land-grant university with its main campus in Blacksburg, Virginia, in the United States. It has nine colleges and a graduate school, about 39,000 students on and off the main campus and a student-faculty ratio of 13:1. It also has the VTC Health Sciences and Technology Campus in Roanoke, home to the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine, and facilities in seven Northern Virginia locations near Washington, D.C.
The university offers more than 110 undergraduate majors and more than 120 master's and doctoral degree programmes. Its main international centre is the Steger Center for International Scholarship in Riva San Vitale, Switzerland, and its Global Education Office arranges study abroad.
International undergraduates apply through the Common Application. Applicants whose native language is not English must prove their English level with a test such as TOEFL or IELTS; those who meet the other requirements can first study at the Virginia Tech Language and Culture Institute. The Cranwell International Center offers immigration advising and support with cultural adjustment. First-year students are guaranteed a place in the 48 on-campus residence halls and are generally required to live there.

Virginia Tech offers more than 120 master's and doctoral degree programmes through its Graduate School, based in the Graduate Life Center in Blacksburg. In the Washington, D.C. area it offers 45 graduate degree and certificate programmes at facilities in seven Northern Virginia locations, including the Institute for Advanced Computing in Alexandria, opened in February 2025.
Graduate funding includes assistantships, scholarships and fellowships, and travel and research grants.
International undergraduate applicants (first-year or transfer) apply through the Common Application. Requirements include:
- Secondary school coursework including 3 units of math and 2 units of laboratory science; most admitted students have at least a B+ average
- A Self-reported Transcript and Academic Record (STARS) or copies of secondary school transcripts and exam results; final official transcripts after admission
- Proof of English proficiency for non-native speakers
- No SAT or ACT required for international applicants
- Evidence of sufficient funds for the first year before the I-20 or DS-2019 form is issued
Applicants with 12 or more credits of university study after secondary school apply as transfer students.
Undergraduate applicants whose native language is not English submit one of these tests, taken within the past two years:
- TOEFL iBT: 80 with no section below 16 (or 4.5 with no section below 4.0 for tests taken on or after 21 January 2026)
- IELTS: 6.5 with no sub-score below 6.5
- PTE: 59
- Duolingo: 115
- Cambridge English: 176
Applicants who have studied four years in English in one of the listed English-speaking countries are exempt. Applicants who meet the other requirements but not the English level can enrol at the Virginia Tech Language and Culture Institute first.
Virginia Tech has 48 on-campus residence halls housing about 10,500 students, and more than 22 living-learning programmes. First-year students are guaranteed university housing and are required to live in the residence halls; first-year students over 21 may live off campus. Housing on campus is not guaranteed after the first year, and students bringing family members cannot live in the residence halls. Graduate students can live at the Graduate Life Center at Donaldson Brown or off campus.
