Christopher Newport University (CNU) is a public, undergraduate-focused liberal arts university in Newport News, Virginia (United States). It was founded in 1960 as a small branch of the College of William & Mary and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to award bachelor's and master's degrees.
CNU offers more than 90 majors built on a core curriculum in the liberal arts and sciences, with fields ranging from engineering and accounting to music and leadership. The Luter School of Business is AACSB-accredited, and students can join the Honors Program or the President's Leadership Program, which combines coursework, service and personal development. There are more than 200 student organisations and NCAA Division III sports.
International freshmen whose native language is not English must submit an English test, such as TOEFL iBT 71 (4.5 for tests from 21 January 2026), IELTS 6.0 or Duolingo 100, and cannot apply test-optional; SAT or ACT scores are optional. CNU guarantees on-campus housing for incoming freshmen for their first three years, in modern residence halls.

Out-of-state costs per semester for full-time undergraduates (12-17 credit hours) in the 2026-2027 academic year:

Undergraduates are expected to live on campus. CNU guarantees on-campus housing for all incoming freshmen for their first three years, and transfer students can live on campus until the end of their junior year. There are separate residence halls for first- and second-year students and for upper-level students, all with modern amenities. A double room on a nine-month contract costs US$3,735 per semester in 2026-2027.
