Washington and Lee University (W&L) is a small private liberal arts university in Lexington, Virginia, in the Shenandoah Valley of the United States, about three hours from Washington, D.C. Founded in 1749, it is the ninth-oldest college in the United States, according to the university. In 2025-26 it had 2,281 students (1,912 undergraduates and 369 law students), and the student body includes citizens of more than 50 countries.
Undergraduates earn a B.A. or B.S. in the College, the liberal arts core (fine arts, humanities, social sciences, journalism and STEM fields), or in the Williams School of Commerce, Economics and Politics. The only graduate programme is the School of Law (J.D.). The academic year has two 12-week terms and a four-week Spring Term in which students take a single class, often off campus or abroad.
International applicants use the Common Application, Coalition Application or QuestBridge Application, and all documents must be in English. International students are eligible for both merit scholarships and need-based aid. Admission is need-blind for all undergraduates, and W&L meets 100% of demonstrated need without loans; the Johnson Scholarship covers full tuition, room and board for up to 44 students each year.
