Hampton University (HU) is a private, historically Black university in Hampton, Virginia, on the Virginia Peninsula near the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. It holds the Carnegie R2 research classification and is known for research in atmospheric science, cancer treatment (including its Proton Therapy Institute) and aerospace. The university reports 4,686 enrolled students from 49 states and 35 territories and nations.
HU offers technical, liberal arts and graduate degree programmes through its schools:
- James T. George School of Business
- School of Engineering, Architecture and Aviation
- Scripps Howard School of Journalism & Communications
- School of Liberal Arts and Education
- Schools of Nursing, Pharmacy, Religion and Science
- Graduate College
An Honors College is also available. International applicants apply through the Common App, and the Hampton University International Office advises on the I-20, visas and immigration matters. Students can live in the university's residence halls, and nearby attractions include Fort Monroe and NASA Langley Research Center.

International applicants must have completed the equivalent of a US high school diploma and submit:
- Common App application and a US$60 application fee
- Official high school transcript and any college/university transcripts
- Proof of English proficiency
- Official SAT or ACT scores
Records not in English need an official translation, and a credential evaluation may be required. Applicants from West Africa submit WASSCE or GCE results.
Applicants whose first language is not English can meet the requirement with TOEFL, SAT or ACT, or the Duolingo English Test; no minimum scores are published on the admissions page.
