Grinnell College is a private, coeducational, residential liberal arts and sciences college in Grinnell, Iowa (United States), founded in 1846 and accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. Students design their own course of study through an individually advised curriculum, with faculty and career advisers.
Besides its majors and concentrations, Grinnell offers programmes such as peace and conflict studies, a 3-2 engineering programme and preparation for graduate study in the health professions, plus internships in the US and abroad. A new Environmental Studies major and a Semester@CERA are due to start in autumn 2027.
According to the college, 1 in 5 students come from outside the United States, representing more than 80 citizenships. International applicants apply through the Common Application, with no application fee and no required supplementary essay; ACT and SAT scores are optional. Applicants whose native language or school language is not English submit TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo English Test results. Grinnell meets 100% of demonstrated need without loans, and international students applying for need-based aid submit the CSS Profile or Grinnell's own international aid application with their admission application. International applicants (anyone without US citizenship or permanent residency) submit through the Common Application, with no application fee:
- Official secondary school transcript, sent by the school
- Official external exam results (e.g. A-Level, IB, IGCSE, WAEC); O-Level students must continue through A-Level
- TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo results if needed
- School report, counselor recommendation and two academic teacher recommendations
- CSS Profile or Grinnell's international aid application, if applying for need-based aid (by the same deadline)
ACT/SAT scores, a short-answer essay (200-450 words) and interviews are optional.
Applicants whose native language is not English and/or whose main language of instruction in high school was not English must demonstrate English proficiency. For autumn 2027 entry, Grinnell accepts the Duolingo English Test, IELTS (including E-Delivery) and TOEFL (iBT at a centre, Home Edition, Paper Edition and TOEFL Essentials; MyBest scores accepted). No minimum scores are stated on the page.
Grinnell meets 100% of demonstrated financial need without loans, offering grants instead. International students can apply for need-based aid by submitting the CSS Profile or Grinnell's International Student Application for Financial Assistance by the admission deadline; students who do not apply for aid in their first year cannot request it later. Need-blind admission applies to domestic applicants only.
