Iowa State University (officially Iowa State University of Science and Technology) is a land-grant university in Ames, Iowa (United States). It was established in 1858 as the Iowa Agricultural College and Model Farm and took its current official name in 1959. It enrols students from every US state and more than 120 countries.

Students can choose from more than 100 majors, minors and certificates in six colleges:

  • Agriculture and Life Sciences
  • Business
  • Design
  • Engineering
  • Health and Human Sciences
  • Liberal Arts and Sciences

The university also offers graduate programmes and a College of Veterinary Medicine; it opened the first state veterinary medicine school in the United States in 1879. Most first-year students join a learning community.

International undergraduates are admitted on a rolling basis on the strength of academic records and English test results; essays and recommendation letters are not required. The International Students and Scholars Office supports international students, and there are an International Student Excellence Award and international merit scholarships. The Department of Residence offers traditional and suite-style halls and family-student apartments.

More than 100 majors, minors and certificates in six colleges:

There are also pre-med, pre-health and pre-law preparation, an Honors Program and an Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing for bachelor's graduates. Admission decisions are not made by major.

Admission Requirements

Rolling admission; applications can be submitted up to one year before the start date, ideally at least six to eight weeks in advance. Non-refundable application fee of US$65.

  • Secondary school GPA equivalent to at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (or SAT 1200+ / ACT 25+), with core courses in English, laboratory science, mathematics and social studies
  • English proficiency test results
  • Transcripts from all schools attended, with certified English translations
  • Bank statement or sponsor letter for one year's expenses: US$52,000 (most majors) or US$54,300 (Design and Animal Enterprise and Innovation)
  • Passport copy

No essays or recommendation letters are required. Scanned documents are accepted for review; official final records are needed after admission.

Language Requirements

  • TOEFL iBT 71 (Speaking and Writing 17 or above), or 4.0 with no band below 3.5 on the scale used from 21 January 2026
  • IELTS 6.0 (all bands 5.5 or above)
  • Duolingo 105, PTE 48
  • SAT EBRW 460 or ACT English 19
  • IB English 5, IGCSE First Language English D or English as a Second Language C

IELTS One Skill Retake and TOEFL MyBest scores are not accepted. Native English speakers from countries where English is a primary official language and graduates of US high schools are exempt.

Fees

Estimated expenses for international undergraduates, 2026-27 academic year (9 months, full-time, "most majors" rate):

  • Tuition and fees: US$33,547
  • Living expenses (room and board, books, personal expenses, health insurance): US$17,332
  • Total: US$50,879

Some majors have higher tuition. Proof of funds for admission: US$52,000 for most majors, US$54,300 for Design and Animal Enterprise and Innovation.

Housing

The Department of Residence offers traditional and suite-style residence halls and family-student apartments. ISU Dining runs more than 20 dining locations on campus. Room and board costs depend on the housing and meal plan chosen.
