Loras College is a Catholic, diocesan liberal arts college in Dubuque, Iowa (United States), on the bluffs above the Mississippi River. It was founded in 1839 and describes itself as Iowa’s first institution of higher learning. Its core curriculum includes ethics, philosophy and theology.

The college offers bachelor’s majors in fields such as business, sciences, engineering, education, health and social sciences, accelerated dual-degree tracks with graduate programmes in health, law and social work, master’s degrees and a twelve-month postbaccalaureate pre-medical/health programme. Students can take part in study abroad, and the college competes in 24 sports in NCAA Division III.

According to the college, its students come from 32 states and 17 countries. International applicants are admitted in limited numbers each semester and submit TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo scores (minimum 115 on the Duolingo English Test). Fully online master’s programmes must be taken from the home country, with no I-20 for a US visa. Housing ranges from residence halls to apartments and college-owned houses, and students must live in college housing until they have 90 credits or turn 21.

Classes are held on campus in the evenings, online or in summer. The application is free and no GRE is required. Fully online programmes must be completed from the home country; the college does not issue an I-20 for them.

Admission Requirements

Undergraduate international applicants (a limited number are admitted each semester) submit:

  • Declaration of finances
  • Secondary school transcripts in English, with a description of the grading scale, evaluated by a NACES-approved service (for example myiee.org, incredevals.org or The Evaluation Company)
  • TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo English Test scores
  • Copy of a valid passport
  • Personal statement on academic challenges and successes

Master’s applicants must submit an official foreign credit evaluation report and check the admission requirements of their programme.

Language Requirements

International undergraduate applicants submit TOEFL or IELTS scores; the Duolingo English Test is also accepted with a minimum score of 115. Minimum TOEFL and IELTS scores are not stated on the international admission page.

Undergraduate direct costs for 2026-27 (summer 2026 to spring 2027 terms):

Financial Aid

The college states that it works with every student and family on financial aid. Financial aid, grants, scholarships and assistantships are not available to international graduate students.

Housing

  • Traditional residence halls (Beckman, Binz, Rohlman) with single, double and larger rooms; a meal plan is required
  • Apartments (Byrne Oaks, Lynch McCarthy) for students with enough credits
  • College-owned houses near campus for three to six students
  • Smyth Hall for postbaccalaureate and graduate students

Students must live in college housing until they complete 90 credits or turn 21, unless they live with family in the Dubuque area. Laundry is free in all college housing.
