The University of Iowa is a public research university in Iowa City, founded in 1847 as the state's oldest higher education institution. It has been a member of the Association of American Universities since 1909 and of the Big Ten Conference since 1899. In fall 2026 it enrolled 31,382 students, 23,415 of them undergraduates and 1,621 international students; students come from more than 100 countries, and the student-to-faculty ratio is 17:1.
Undergraduates can choose from more than 200 majors, minors and certificates. Areas the university highlights include:
- Writing, including its creative writing tradition
- Medicine, nursing and pharmacy, with five health science colleges close together
- Communication sciences and disorders
- Physics and astronomy, and hydroscience
International applicants use the University of Iowa application or the Common App (fall only), pay an US$80 fee and upload transcripts. Estimated 2026-27 tuition and fees for international undergraduates range from US$35,442 (liberal arts and sciences) to US$39,316 (nursing). The university offers merit scholarships to outstanding international students, and the International Student & Scholar Services office supports them during their studies.

Strengths highlighted by the university include writing (resources open to all students), communication sciences and disorders, physics and astronomy, hydroscience, nursing and neuroscience. Exam results can earn college credit.
In fall 2026 Iowa had 6,039 graduate and 1,928 professional students. Graduate and professional options include the Doctor of Pharmacy, medicine at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, creative writing and playwriting workshops, and PhD programmes such as industrial and systems engineering; according to the university, 13 graduate programmes rank in the US top 10. Some programmes are offered online or in hybrid format.
The international application is for students who are not US citizens or permanent residents. Steps:
- Apply with the University of Iowa application or the Common App (fall only); decisions are rolling from mid-September
- Pay the non-refundable US$80 application fee
- Upload official transcripts from all secondary and post-secondary institutions; requirements vary by country
- Meet the English proficiency requirement (TOEFL or IELTS sent by the testing agency, if applicable)
- ACT or SAT only if used for English proficiency or scholarships; general admission is test-optional
Students who must take the English Proficiency Exam on arrival pay a US$120 fee.
Estimated costs for international undergraduates in the 2026-27 academic year (full-time, fall and spring):

Fees include a US$250 international student fee and a US$120 international orientation fee. International students are not eligible for need-based aid.
For fall 2027 entry, first-year applicants must submit a complete application by 1 February 2027 (with test scores taken by 12 December 2026, if any) to be considered for merit scholarships. Later applicants are admitted case by case, as space allows. Admission decisions are made on a rolling basis from mid-September.
Iowa offers competitive merit scholarships to outstanding international first-year and transfer students, many renewable for up to four years. For fall 2027, first-year non-resident students who apply by 1 February 2027 are automatically considered for the National Scholars Award of US$2,000 to US$15,000 a year, renewable with a 2.75 GPA. International students do not qualify for need-based aid, but F-1 and J-1 students may work on campus up to 20 hours a week during semesters.
