Istituto universitario di studi superiori di Pavia
University in Pavia, Italy
IUSS Pavia (Istituto Universitario di Studi Superiori, University School for Advanced Studies) is a public university school for advanced studies in Pavia, Lombardy, Italy, and the only one of its kind in the region. It was founded in 1997 and, since 2018, has been federated with the Scuola Normale Superiore and the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna of Pisa. Its teaching and research focus on cognitive neuroscience, neurolinguistics and philosophy of mind, risk assessment and reduction, climate change and sustainability, and space and data science.
IUSS does not run ordinary bachelor's degrees. Instead it offers:
- Undergraduate Courses: free advanced courses taken alongside a degree at the Università di Pavia or the Università di Milano (La Statale)
- PhD programmes within the IUSS Doctoral School
- Master di alta formazione, such as Medicine Enhanced by Engineering Technologies (MEET)
Admission to the Undergraduate Courses is open to citizens of all nationalities and is based solely on merit through a national public competition. Successful students (Allievi) receive a study award that covers all or part of their university fees and the cost of residence at the Pavia Colleges of Merit or EDiSU colleges, for the whole course.

Programmes
The IUSS Undergraduate Courses (corsi ordinari) are free advanced courses, organised in thematic cycles, that students follow alongside their degree at the University of Pavia or the University of Milan. They are grouped in two academic classes:
- Human and Life Sciences (human sciences and biomedical sciences)
- Science, Technology and Society (science and technology, social sciences)
Cycles match the student's degree: a three-year first-level cycle, a two-year second-level cycle or a single cycle (six years for Medicine and Surgery). IUSS awards a licence diploma at the end of each cycle.
Graduate programmes
IUSS runs PhD programmes within its Doctoral School, which adds interdisciplinary courses by thematic area, transversal skills training and cultural events. Admission requires a master's degree or an equivalent foreign qualification. It also offers university master's programmes (master di alta formazione) of at least one year and 60 credits, such as Medicine Enhanced by Engineering Technologies (MEET).
Admission
Admission to the Undergraduate Courses is open to all nationalities and is by public selection based on merit, assessing preparation, talent, motivation and potential. Students at the University of Pavia must also win a place in one of the Pavia Colleges of Merit (or an EDiSU college place by IUSS ranking); students at the University of Milan must win a place at the Collegio di Milano. PhD admission is through the competitions announced by IUSS and published on the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MUR) website.
Scholarships and financial aid
IUSS courses and seminars are free. All students admitted to the Undergraduate Courses receive a study award that reimburses all or part of their university fees and residence costs at the Colleges of Merit or EDiSU colleges, guaranteed for the whole course if they meet the school's requirements.
Housing
IUSS students live in Pavia's university colleges: the Colleges of Merit (Almo Collegio Borromeo, Collegio Ghislieri, Collegio Nuovo and Collegio Santa Caterina da Siena) or the EDiSU colleges Volta and Cairoli. The study award for successful candidates covers all or part of the residence costs, and IUSS aims to offer free college places with the colleges and EDiSU.
