Mayrit Escuela Activa (Mayrit Active School) is a small active-learning school in Pozuelo de Alarcón (Madrid), at Calle Orense 108. It teaches children from 3 to 12 years old. Mayrit is accredited by NEASC and authorised by the Comunidad de Madrid as a foreign school (centro extranjero). It was started by a group of families who wanted a respectful and active childhood for their children, and it is run as a self-managed project with small groups.
The teaching blends several active pedagogies, including Montessori, Reggio Emilia, Decroly and Creative Education. Classes mix ages:
- Early Years (Infantil): ages 3-6
- Primary: ages 6-12
Teachers are called mentors (acompañantes), and the team includes bilingual mentors. The school has a catering service for lunch.
Admission is open all year, but places tend to fill early, so the school recommends requesting an interview between January and April for a September start. The process has four steps: first contact by form or phone, an interview with the pedagogical director (ideally with the child), a visit to the classrooms, and submission of documents with an initial enrolment payment to reserve the place. Fees vary with services such as lunch and extended hours and are given at the interview.
