Northeastern State University (NSU) is a public university in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, in the south-central United States, with further campuses in Muskogee and Broken Arrow and online programmes. It describes itself as Oklahoma's oldest institution of higher education and the state's fourth-largest public university.

NSU offers 56 undergraduate and 25 graduate degree programmes, including master's degrees and a Doctor of Education. It is also home to the Oklahoma College of Optometry, the only optometry school in Oklahoma. Fields include:

International applicants are supported by the Office of International Programs and need, for example, TOEFL iBT 61 or IELTS 5.5. Full-time international students can apply for international student scholarships, and those who meet regular admission requirements and live on campus may qualify for a waiver of 50% of non-resident tuition. Housing & Residence Life runs on-campus accommodation in Tahlequah.

Admission Requirements

International undergraduate applicants submit:

  • Online application and a non-refundable US$25 fee (no waivers)
  • Official transcripts from all secondary schools attended, with English translation and GPA on a 4.0 scale (digital copies accepted for the decision; originals on arrival)
  • For credit earned outside the U.S.: a course-by-course evaluation by WES or ECE
  • English test scores
  • Proof of finances for the first year (International Student Financial Statement) and a copy of the passport

Language Requirements

TOEFL or IELTS scores are required for admission to all NSU programmes for international students. Minimum scores for undergraduate and transfer applicants:

  • TOEFL iBT 61
  • IELTS 5.5
  • PTE Academic 44
  • iTEP Academic 3.5

Applicants with more than 24 credit hours at a U.S. university are exempt.

Fees

Estimated cost of attendance for international students needing a student visa, 2026-27 academic year (based on 30 credit hours):

  • Tuition and fees (out-of-state): US$18,367.50
  • International fees: US$300, plus a one-time orientation fee of US$50
  • Health insurance: US$1,000
  • Books and supplies: US$800
  • Housing and food: US$9,020
  • Total: US$29,537.50

Financial Aid

Full-time, degree-seeking international students can apply for international scholarships applied to non-resident tuition, such as:

  • Presidential: GPA 3.75, US$2,000-5,000 for one year
  • Academic Excellence: GPA 3.0, US$1,000-2,000
  • International Freshmen: GPA 2.75, US$500-1,000

Students with regular admission who live on campus may also qualify for a waiver of 50% of non-resident tuition. International students are not eligible for U.S. federal aid.

Housing

Housing & Residence Life manages on-campus housing in Tahlequah, with applications for 2026-27 open online. The international cost estimate is based on a room in the Leoser Complex with a 180-meal block and a US$175 flex meal plan. Students who want the 50% non-resident tuition waiver must live on campus.
