The University of Oklahoma (OU) is the state's flagship university, a public research university founded in 1890, 17 years before Oklahoma became a state. Its main campus is in Norman, with further campuses in Tulsa and Oklahoma City, where the Harold Hamm Health Campus is located. OU has more than 36,500 students.
Undergraduates can choose from more than 170 academic programmes leading to a bachelor's degree, and the Graduate College offers more than 260 master's and doctoral majors. OU Online offers degree-completion and graduate programmes online. Students can also join more than 100 study abroad programmes and over 500 student organisations.
According to the university, more than 2,000 international students from 136 countries study at OU. International Student Services supports students on the Norman campus, and the Center for English as a Second Language (CESL) offers a route for students who still need to meet the English requirement. International first-year applicants need a minimum 3.0 GPA and an IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 79, Duolingo 100 or PTE 53 score; SAT/ACT scores are optional and used for international scholarships.

Admission
International first-year applicants need a minimum 3.0 GPA and apply with the OU application, the Common Application or Coalition with Scoir. They submit official transcripts from all secondary schools attended, plus national graduation exam certificates where these exist (with a certified English translation if needed), proof of English proficiency, a copy of their passport and a non-refundable US$90 application fee. Letters of recommendation and SAT/ACT scores are optional. Engineering and computer science applicants need a B average. After admission, students provide financial documents covering annual study and living costs to receive the I-20.
Language requirements
Applicants whose second language is English must show proficiency in one of these ways (test scores no older than two years):
- TOEFL iBT 79, generally with at least 20 in each section
- IELTS 6.5
- Duolingo English Test 100
- PTE Academic 53
- 24 or more semester hours of university study in the US or a native English-speaking country
- Completion of OU's Center for English as a Second Language (CESL) programme
