Northwestern State University of Louisiana (NSU) is a public university founded in 1884 in Natchitoches, Louisiana, and according to the university the oldest continually occupied site of higher learning in the state. Besides the main campus it has an off-campus instructional site in Shreveport, centres in Alexandria and Leesville/Fort Polk, and eNSU, its online campus with more than 40 online degrees.

NSU offers more than 100 degree programmes, from associate degrees (for example in nursing) and bachelor's degrees to master's, specialist and doctoral programmes, as well as the Louisiana Scholars' College, its honours college. The student-to-faculty ratio is 16:1, and the university has 14 NCAA Division I teams.

International students apply through the International Student Resource Center, which handles undergraduate, graduate and fully online applications. Unmarried full-time undergraduates are generally required to live on campus, in apartment-style or residence-hall communities managed by Campus Living Villages.

Admission

International applicants send all documents to the International Student Resource Center:

  • Online application and US$30 international application fee
  • Proof of English proficiency (applicants from non-English-speaking countries)
  • Evaluation of foreign credentials by an approved US agency: document-by-document with GPA for freshmen, course-by-course with GPA for transfers
  • ACT or SAT scores where required; GRE for some graduate programmes
  • Financial Statement Certification with bank documents in US dollars, health form and passport copy

Graduate applicants need the equivalent of a bachelor's degree. No I-20 is issued until the applicant is fully admitted.

Language requirements

Minimum English scores:

  • Undergraduate: TOEFL iBT 79 (paper 550), IELTS 6.5, Duolingo 100, ACT English 18, SAT ERW 500
  • Graduate: TOEFL iBT 79 (paper 550), IELTS 6.5, Duolingo 100

Not required for native English speakers or for transfers from US colleges and universities.

Housing

All unmarried full-time undergraduates must live on campus unless they qualify for an exemption. Campus housing is managed by Campus Living Villages and includes University Columns (apartment-style), University Place (with living-learning communities) and Varnado Hall Residential College for creative and performing arts majors. New students apply through the housing portal and pay a US$150 non-refundable application fee.
