The Scuola Normale Superiore (SNS) is a higher education and research institution based in Pisa, Italy, with its headquarters in Piazza dei Cavalieri in the historic centre. Lecture rooms, laboratories, library, canteen and colleges are all within one kilometre of each other, forming a campus integrated into the city. The SNS also has premises in Florence, at Palazzo Strozzi and Palazzo Vegni. It is organised into three faculties: Humanities, Sciences, and Political and Social Sciences.
- Ordinary course (corso ordinario): bachelor's and master's level, in humanities and philosophy, sciences and, at master's level only, political and social sciences
- PhD programmes, open to Italian and international graduates
- Orientation courses for secondary school students
Admission to the ordinary course is by a highly selective competition based solely on merit. Students follow the SNS courses together with the corresponding university degree courses. Internal courses, board and lodging are free, and students receive an annual grant based on family income (ISEE). For the PhD, around 90 places are usually offered each year through a competition based on qualifications and exams; on average 30% of those admitted come from abroad, and all admitted students receive a scholarship. The SNS takes part in Erasmus+ and in the EELISA European university alliance.
