Skidmore College is a coeducational liberal arts college in Saratoga Springs, New York, about three hours by car from New York City and Boston. It was founded in 1903 by Lucy Skidmore Scribner, originally as the Young Women's Industrial Club. Skidmore has about 2,700 students, including approximately 300 international students from more than 60 countries.

The college offers more than 40 majors and minors in the arts, sciences, humanities and business, and students can also design their own major. Popular fields include business, biology, chemistry, computer science, dance, economics, environmental sciences, psychology and studio art. Dual-degree and 4+1 options include engineering with Dartmouth College and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and MBA programmes with Clarkson University and the Rochester Institute of Technology.

International students apply through the Common Application or Coalition Application, and need-based financial aid is available to them. The International Student and Scholar advising team provides visa guidance and support from acceptance to graduation. On-campus housing is guaranteed for four years, and 90% of students live on campus.

Admission Requirements

International applicants (anyone who is not a US citizen or permanent resident) need the equivalent of a US secondary school education. They submit the Common Application or Coalition Application, official secondary school transcripts with certified English translations, at least one teacher or counsellor recommendation, English test results if required, and financial aid documents if applying for aid. IB and A-Level students also send predicted results. Skidmore is test-optional (SAT/ACT not required), and agents are not needed to apply.

Language Requirements

Teaching is in English. Applicants whose first language is not English and who have not attended school for at least three years in English only must submit TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo results. As a general indicator of minimum proficiency, the college cites TOEFL 96-97, IELTS 7.0-7.5 or Duolingo 120. IB Diploma students can obtain a waiver.

Financial Aid

Need-based financial aid is available to international applicants, who submit either the CSS Profile or the free Skidmore International Student Financial Aid Application (ISFAA). According to the college, Skidmore meets 100% of demonstrated need for admitted students through need-based grants. International students can also work on campus.

Housing

On-campus housing is guaranteed for all students for four years, and 90% live on campus. First-year students live in suite-style residence halls and are assigned rooms based on a questionnaire completed the summer before arrival; older students can apply for campus apartments. Laundry is free, and international students can request on-campus housing during holidays and breaks.
