The American School of Barcelona (ASB) is a non-profit international school in Esplugues de Llobregat, just outside Barcelona. It was founded in 1962 by Dr José María Poal as an English-language American school and moved to its permanent campus in Esplugues after starting in Pedralbes. ASB has around 960 students from 60 countries. It is accredited by the Middle States Association of the United States, officially recognised by the Generalitat de Catalunya and has been an authorised International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme school since 2007.
- Early Childhood (PK3, PK4, K5)
- Elementary School (Grades 1-5)
- Middle School (Grades 6-8)
- High School (Grades 9-12)
The school teaches an American curriculum from preschool to Grade 12. In High School, students choose between three graduation pathways: the IB Diploma Programme, the IB Career-related Programme and the US High School Diploma. Activities include athletics, visual and performing arts, music, service learning, clubs such as Model United Nations, and trips. Applications are accepted year round; the admissions process includes an online application with academic records and teacher references, and assessments of English and maths. ASB also runs an English Language Center with weekday, Saturday and summer English courses for external students.
