The University of Sydney describes itself as Australia's first university. Its main address is City Road, Camperdown/Darlington, in Sydney, New South Wales. It has more than 70,000 students, over 450 courses across 10 study areas and more than 150 research centres, and it is ranked 28th in the world in the QS World University Rankings 2027, according to the university.

Courses are offered at undergraduate, postgraduate coursework and research level, as well as short courses. Most courses take applications twice a year, and semesters start in February and August. International students without a recognised qualification can take preparation programmes delivered by Taylors College, and English courses are available at the university's Centre for English Teaching; the standard English requirement is IELTS 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0. Students can live in university residences, residential colleges or off-campus housing, and scholarships range from partial to full funding.

International applicants must meet the university's entry requirements for their course and the Australian Government's Genuine Student (GS) requirement. Applications include:
- Academic certificates and transcripts
- Proof of English proficiency
- Proof of identity, such as a passport
- For some programmes, a supplementary form, personal statement or portfolio
Documents not in English must be translated by an accredited translator such as NAATI. Undergraduate applicants without a recognised qualification can take preparation programmes delivered by Taylors College. Most courses take applications twice a year, for semesters starting in February and August, and credit for prior study or work can be requested.
All courses are taught in English. The standard requirement is an IELTS overall score of 6.5 with no band below 6.0, although some faculties and courses set different levels. Equivalent scores are accepted in TOEFL iBT (not the Home Edition), PTE, LanguageCert Academic (in person), Cambridge C1 Advanced and C2 Proficiency. English proficiency can also be shown through recognised secondary or tertiary studies in English, or by completing a course at the university's Centre for English Teaching.
Indicative first-year tuition for international students starting in 2027 (full-time, 48 credit points), undergraduate courses:
- Architecture, design and planning: A$55,100
- Arts and social sciences: A$51,700 to A$59,100
- Engineering and computer science: A$63,600
- Health sciences: A$63,600 to A$69,200
- Nursing: A$51,700
Postgraduate coursework in engineering and computer science costs A$60,800 to A$64,800 for 2027 entry. These are guide figures; the exact fee is on each course page and fees are reviewed every year.
The University of Sydney offers scholarships ranging from partial to full funding, as well as awards and prizes. Applicants may be considered automatically for some scholarships when they apply; others require a separate application before the deadline.
The University of Sydney offers three main types of accommodation:
- University residences: self-catered rooms on campus
- Residential colleges: on-campus colleges with furnished rooms, three meals a day and laundry
- Off-campus options: independent student housing, homestays (including with university alumni) and private share houses
Housing is available at Camperdown/Darlington, Kensington and the Camden campus, among other sites. Applications for 2027 university accommodation are open, with limited availability.
