The Public Policy program at William & Mary (W&M), in Williamsburg, Virginia, is part of the university's College of Arts & Sciences. W&M is a public university chartered in 1693, with more than 7,000 undergraduates and about 2,700 graduate students. The program studies how societies use public, private and non-profit resources to solve problems, combining quantitative and economic analysis, the study of political institutions and policy areas such as health, the environment, education, international development and state and local affairs. Coursework is mainly in economics and government, with courses in psychology, sociology, law and philosophy.

Undergraduates can work as research assistants on projects run by master's students, apply for stipends for low- or unpaid summer internships, attend talks by visiting practitioners and join the Public Policy Club. The university's Schroeder Center for Health Policy is linked to the program. Richmond, the state capital, is one hour away and Washington, D.C., three hours. The program office is in Chancellors Hall.

Core courses build analytical skills, and electives cover a range of policy topics, for example the economics of US health policy, innovation for defence, social network analysis, and negotiation and public leadership.

Graduate programmes

The Public Policy program offers two routes to a master's degree:

  • Master of Public Policy (two-year program)
  • Accelerated five-year master's for W&M undergraduates (combined bachelor's and Master of Public Policy)

Housing

William & Mary has a two-year live-on requirement, and more than 4,000 students live on campus. Options include first-year housing, living-learning and special-interest communities, and off-campus housing, with help from Residence Life. Students eat at the Commons Dining Hall and the Food Hall in the Sadler student center.
