The Università degli Studi della Basilicata (Unibas) is a university in the southern Italian region of Basilicata, with campuses in Potenza (Macchia Romana and Francioso) and Matera (via Lanera). It was created after the 1980 earthquake under the reconstruction law, and teaching began in Potenza in 1982; the Matera site opened in 1992.

Its five departments cover agriculture, forestry, food and environmental sciences; engineering; basic and applied sciences; health sciences; and the humanities and social sciences. In 2023/2024 the university listed 35 degree programmes (15 bachelor's, 16 master's and 4 single-cycle degrees, three of them international), as well as 5 PhD programmes, university master's and specialisation schools.

Unibas takes part in Erasmus+ and has a university language centre. Non-EU applicants living abroad pre-enrol through the Universitaly portal; for 2026/2027 the deadline is 31 October 2026.

Bachelor's degrees (laurea), mostly in Potenza, include:

Master's degrees (laurea magistrale) cover archaeology and art history, biotechnology for diagnostics, economics and management, classical and modern philology, geology, civil, computer (artificial intelligence), mechanical and environmental engineering, mathematics, chemistry, agricultural, food and forest sciences, and European history.

Unibas also offers 5 PhD programmes run with other Italian or foreign institutions, first- and second-level university master's (at least one year) and a specialisation school in archaeology.

Admission Requirements

For the 2026-27 academic year, non-EU students living abroad who need a study visa must pre-enrol online on the Universitaly portal by 31 October 2026, stating the degree they wish to enrol in. Pre-enrolment is required to request the study visa from the Italian embassy or consulate in the country of residence, by 30 November 2026. Acceptance by the university does not guarantee a visa. The university's page also covers required documents, CIMEA certificates of foreign qualifications, language knowledge and places available for non-EU applicants.
