University in Viterbo, Italy

The Università degli Studi della Tuscia (University of Tuscia, Unitus) is a public university founded in 1979 in Viterbo, Italy, with its historic seat in the Santa Maria in Gradi complex. It also has sites in Civitavecchia and Rieti. Fees are based on income.

Teaching and research are organised in six departments:

  • Agriculture and Forest Sciences (DAFNE)
  • Ecological and Biological Sciences (DEB)
  • Economics, Engineering, Society and Business Organization (DEIM)
  • Innovation in Biological, Agro-food and Forestry Systems (DIBAF)
  • Legal, Social and Educational Sciences (DIKE)
  • Linguistic and Literary, Historical, Philosophical and Legal Studies (DISTU)

Unitus offers bachelor's, master's and single-cycle degree programmes, eight doctoral schools and first- and second-level university master's courses. Some degree programmes are taught in English and require English at CEFR level B2; programmes taught in Italian require Italian at B2. Students can use a University Language Centre (CLA), a student house and canteen, and an International Desk, and the university takes part in Erasmus study and traineeship exchanges.

Graduate programmes

Postgraduate study includes second-cycle master's degrees (laurea magistrale), eight doctoral schools and a specialisation school for the legal professions. First- and second-level university master's courses are organised by the departments or by Unitus Academy, for example:

Admission

Steps for international students:

  • Meet the language requirement (see language requirements)
  • Master's programmes: apply online to the programme and receive an admission letter from the course coordinator; bachelor's programmes: take the entry test
  • Pre-enrol on the Universitaly portal (open for 2026/27) and upload documents: secondary school diploma after at least 12 years of schooling (and, for master's, a bachelor's degree and transcript), with apostille or legalisation and a certified Italian translation unless issued in English, plus a Declaration of Value or CIMEA/ARDI statement
  • Apply for a study visa: for 2026/27, by 30 November 2026; applicants must show means of €10,179.85 per year
  • Complete enrolment in person at the International Students desk in Viterbo (from 1 August 2026)

Language requirements

  • Programmes taught in English: CEFR level B2, shown by IELTS, TOEFL, TCL, Cambridge First, PTE Academic, Oxford Test of English, Aptis ESOL General or Advanced, or an English-medium-of-instruction certificate from previous university studies
  • Programmes taught in Italian: Italian at level B2, with a certificate (PLIDA, CELI, CILS or CERT.IT) or by passing the CISIA Italian test (minimum score 50), offered online by the University Language Centre; all 2026 test dates are fully booked

Fees

Tuition at Unitus depends on income. For the 2026-27 academic year, international students with income or assets outside Italy declare them through the ISEEUP procedure; those who do not submit an ISEEUP pay a fixed fee set in the university's fee regulations. Exchange and double-degree students pay tuition only at their home university; double-degree students pay Unitus only the degree award fee (€66) and the diploma fee (€16).

Housing

To help out-of-town and international students find housing in Viterbo, Civitavecchia and Rieti, the university has agreements with selected organisations, businesses and private owners, including hotels and a religious institute in Viterbo and the Fondazione Cariciv in Civitavecchia. There is also a student house and canteen.
