The Università degli Studi di Catania (UniCT, University of Catania), also known as Siciliae Studium Generale, is a university in Catania, Sicily, founded in 1434; according to the university it is the oldest in Sicily and has an average of 38,000 students. Teaching is organised in 17 departments and a School of Medicine, with further teaching units in Ragusa and Siracusa. The Scuola Superiore di Catania, founded in 1998, is a special unit for selected high-achieving students.

For 2026/2027 UniCT offers 112 degree courses: 51 bachelor's degrees, 9 single-cycle master's degrees and 52 two-year master's degrees, as well as doctorates. Courses taught in English include:

  • Physics; Data Science
  • Chemical Engineering for Industrial Sustainability; Construction Management and Safety
  • Automation, Communications, Electrical and Electronic Engineering
  • Agricultural Sciences and Technology
  • Global Politics and Euro-Mediterranean Relations

International students can find information on enrolment, recognition of foreign qualifications, residence documents, fees and scholarships, and a Foundation Year on the university's website, with an International Students' Guide and a dedicated foreign students office. UniCT awards its own scholarships for international students, and international students have free access to Italian courses at its School of Italian Language and Culture, founded in 2016. The university takes part in Erasmus+ and the EUNICE European University alliance.

Graduate programmes

The 2026/2027 catalogue lists 52 two-year master's degrees (laurea magistrale), mostly in Italian. Master's degrees taught in English:

Relazioni internazionali is taught in Italian and English. UniCT also offers doctoral programmes.

Scholarships and financial aid

The University of Catania awards its own scholarships to international students, with published eligibility criteria and an online application. International applicants can also apply for scholarships from the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI) for foreign citizens not resident in Italy.
