The University of Calcutta is a university in Kolkata, India, with its main address at 87/1 College Street. It was founded on 24 January 1857, following a despatch of 1854 from the East India Company that proposed universities in Calcutta, Madras and Bombay, and it first followed the model of the University of London. According to the university, it has more than 14,000 students and over 1,180 members of faculty, and it awarded more than 498 doctorates in 2024-25.

Teaching and research take place on several campuses in the city, including College Street, Rajabazar Science College, Ballygunge Science College, Alipore, B.T. Road, the Law College, Home Science and Technology campuses, and a campus in Baruipur. The university also has affiliated colleges. Current programmes include:

  • Five-year B.A. LLB. (Hons.) and two-year LL.M in law
  • Four-year B.Tech. degrees, for example in Chemical Technology and in Electronics Engineering (VLSI Design and Technology)
  • PhD programmes in departments such as Physics, Urdu and Ancient Indian History and Culture

Nobel laureates associated with the university include Rabindranath Tagore and C. V. Raman, who both taught there. The university has halls and hostels, including accommodation for postgraduate students.
