The University of Delhi (DU) was established in 1922 in Delhi, India, by an Act of the then Central Legislative Assembly, as a unitary, teaching and residential university. The President of India is its Visitor. It began with three colleges and 750 students; the university now reports 16 faculties, 86 departments, 91 colleges and more than seven lakh (700,000) students, and lists a NAAC A++ accreditation grade.

More than 500 programmes are approved by its Academic and Executive Councils, from undergraduate and postgraduate courses to M.Phil. and PhD. Faculties include:

Distance and continuing education is offered through the School of Open Learning. Students from abroad are handled by a Foreign Students' Registry and the university's international offices, and the university offers hostels, scholarships and fellowships.
