The University of Madras is a university in Tamil Nadu, India, established on 5 September 1857 by an Act of the Legislative Council of India and organised on the model of the University of London. The Governor of Tamil Nadu is its Chancellor. Today its area of jurisdiction covers three districts of Tamil Nadu: Chennai, Thiruvallur and Kancheepuram. The university has been graded A++ by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), has category-1 status from the University Grants Commission (UGC) and was ranked 39th in the university category of the 2024 NIRF ranking.
Undergraduate and postgraduate education is delivered mainly through affiliated institutions in those three districts. The university's own departments are spread over four campuses and organised into 18 schools, which offer:
- Postgraduate courses in their specialisations
- Full-time and part-time PhD programmes
- Diploma and certificate programmes
- Professional courses such as the MBA and MCA
Through its Institute of Distance Education (IDE), the university also offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, including degrees in music and an M.A. in Christian Studies. Research covers the arts, humanities, science, management and technology. Postgraduate admission to the university departments includes an entrance examination, and the website publishes separate registration fees for foreign students.

- M.Sc. in Molecular and Structural Biology
- M.Music, M.A. Vaishnavism and M.A. Christian Studies through the Institute of Distance Education
Admission to postgraduate degrees includes an entrance examination. The M.Phil. degree has been discontinued.
