The University of Memphis (UofM) is a public research university founded in 1912 in a residential neighbourhood of Memphis, Tennessee. The university describes itself as a Tennessee flagship institution and holds the Carnegie R1 research classification. It welcomes more than 21,000 students each year and reports a student-to-faculty ratio of 16:1.
Students can choose from more than 220 programmes in 12 colleges and schools, at bachelor's, master's and doctoral level, as well as law. Study is possible at the main campus in Memphis, at the UofM Lambuth campus in Jackson, Tennessee, or fully online through UofM Global.
Students from 84 countries are currently enrolled. International applicants who still need to prove their English level can join the Intensive English for Internationals (IEI) programme, which leads to full admission. The main campus has eight housing communities, including graduate and family housing, and the housing department supports new international students. The university lists more than 700 scholarships.

International undergraduate application steps:
- Complete the online application (Common App is accepted for first-year applicants)
- Pay the non-refundable US$50 application fee
- Upload documents to the Tiger Tracks portal
- Submit English proficiency scores if applying from a non-English-speaking country
- After admission, complete the I-20 and visa documents
Applicants on a visa must also send a PDF copy of the visa after admission so that tuition can be assessed.
Minimum English scores for undergraduate admission: TOEFL iBT 61 (before 2026) or 4 (from 2026), IELTS 6, PTE 50, Duolingo 95 or iTEP 3.7. SAT (540 Evidence-Based Reading and Writing) or ACT (21 English) scores are also accepted. Test scores are valid for two years.
Native English speakers from approved English-speaking countries are exempt. Applicants can also gain full admission through the Intensive English for Internationals (IEI) programme.
The main campus offers eight housing communities, from traditional residence halls to apartment-style living, including Graduate and Student Family Housing. Living Learning Communities group students by field of study with faculty support. The Lambuth campus has its own residence hall, and the housing department supports new international students.
