The University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) is a public research university in Kansas City, on the Missouri side of the city, and has been part of the city's life for almost a century. It holds the Carnegie R1 research designation, the only one in Kansas City, and has two campuses: the Volker Campus near the Country Club Plaza and the Health Sciences Campus in the city's healthcare district. The student-faculty ratio is 13:1, and students come from 80 countries. UMKC was placed No. 350 in TIME Magazine's Top 500 Universities ranking for 2026, according to the university.

There are more than 125 areas of study, from bachelor's degrees to graduate certificates, master's and doctoral degrees, and professional doctorates in dentistry (DDS), medicine (MD) and pharmacy (PharmD).

International applicants are supported by International Student and Scholar Services in the Atterbury Student Success Center. The application fee is US$75. Students whose English scores meet the undergraduate minimum but not their programme's requirement can be admitted conditionally and take English courses at the Applied Language Institute first. On-campus housing and study abroad opportunities are available.

Admission

International applicants:

  • Choose a programme in the Program Finder (doctoral applicants contact the programme and the School of Graduate Studies)
  • Take an English proficiency exam, if required
  • Apply online, submit the application documents and pay the non-refundable US$75 application fee
  • Have complete official academic records and any required official test scores sent to UMKC

Language requirements

  • Undergraduate: TOEFL iBT 70, IELTS Academic 6.0 (5.5 in all bands), PTE 48, Duolingo 100
  • Graduate: TOEFL iBT 79, IELTS Academic 6.5 (6.0 in all bands), PTE 53, Duolingo 110

Some programmes (e.g. architecture, music, graduate biology, clinical psychology, dental hygiene) require higher scores. Citizens of countries with English as an official language and holders of a degree from the U.S., Canada, the UK, New Zealand or Australia are exempt. Conditional admission with English courses at the Applied Language Institute is possible when undergraduate minimums are met.
