The University of Missouri–St. Louis (UMSL) is a public, land-grant research university with nearly 15,000 students. Its campus covers more than 350 acres in suburban St. Louis County, Missouri (United States), with residence halls, condominiums and apartments. UMSL is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission at bachelor's, master's and doctoral level, and its business school holds AACSB accreditation in business and accounting. U.S. News & World Report ranks it No. 136 among public universities, according to the university.

Programmes cover arts and humanities, natural and social sciences, business and finance, education, nursing and healthcare, engineering and technology, from bachelor's degrees to master's, doctoral and certificate programmes, on campus, online or in the evening. Accelerated bachelor's-master's pathways and an Honors College are also available.

International students are supported by UMSL Global, which also runs study abroad. The international application fee is US$40, and International Merit Scholarships are awarded to F-1 students without a separate application. First-year students live in Oak Residence Hall. For 2026-27, undergraduate tuition for international students starts at US$1,370 per credit hour (about US$41,100 for 30 credit hours).

Programmes

Bachelor's programmes in arts and humanities, natural sciences, social sciences, business and finance, education, nursing and healthcare, engineering and technology. Examples:

  • Business: Accounting, Business Administration, Economics, FinTech, Supply Chain Analytics, Information Systems and Technology
  • Sciences and computing: Biology, Biochemistry and Biotechnology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Computer Science, Cybersecurity
  • Social sciences and humanities: Communication, Criminology and Criminal Justice, History, Philosophy, Political Science, Public Policy Administration
  • Nursing (BSN and accelerated BSN), Social Work, Engineering, Education

Many of these majors offer accelerated bachelor's-master's pathways, and pre-professional tracks prepare for law and health professions. There are also more than 60 non-degree certificate programmes.

  • MBA (also online) and Doctor of Business Administration (DBA)
  • Master of Science in Cybersecurity
  • Criminology and Criminal Justice
  • Master of Social Work (MSW)

Admission

International undergraduate applicants:

  • Submit the international application and the US$40 application fee
  • Submit proof of English proficiency
  • Upload unofficial transcripts to the applicant portal (documents are not accepted by email; official ones are required later); with more than 24 university credit hours, high school transcripts are not needed
  • For the F-1 visa: passport valid for at least six months beyond the intended stay, a statement of finances covering one year (in English, less than six months old) and the UMSL Affidavit of Support

Up to 30 credit hours can be awarded for A-Levels, IB, CAPE or AP exams.

Language requirements

Minimum English scores for international undergraduate applicants: TOEFL 61 (4.0), IELTS Academic 5.5, Cambridge English C1 Advanced 160, PTE Academic 44 or Duolingo 90. The TOEFL institution code is 6889.

Fees

Estimated costs for international undergraduates in the 2026-27 academic year (30 credit hours, nine months):

  • Tuition per credit hour: US$1,370 (Arts & Sciences, Education, Social Work), US$1,440 (Business, Information Systems), US$1,488 (Nursing), US$1,500 (Engineering)
  • Annual tuition: from US$41,100 (Arts & Sciences) to US$45,000 (Engineering), plus US$200 in fees
  • Living expenses: US$13,356; health insurance: US$2,932; books and supplies: US$4,702
  • Total required for the I-20: from US$62,290

Scholarships and financial aid

UMSL awards competitive International Merit Scholarships to top-performing F-1 international students, reducing tuition. No separate application is required. The scholarships are only for F-1 students and depend on keeping F-1 status and satisfactory academic progress.

Housing

All first-year students must live in Oak Residence Hall during their first year. The campus has residence halls, condominiums and apartments, as well as dining halls. The estimated living expenses used for the I-20 in 2026-27 are US$13,356 for the academic year.
