The University of Portsmouth is a university with its main campus in Portsmouth, the UK's only island city, on the south coast of England, and a second campus in Walthamstow, London. It welcomes students from around 150 countries. Its research ranges from cosmology and astrophysics to cyber security, forensics and sport science. Teaching is organised in five faculties:
- Business and Law
- Creative and Cultural Industries (architecture, art, design, film and media)
- Humanities and Social Sciences (including education, languages and criminology)
- Science and Health (including medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, psychology and sport)
- Technology (engineering, surveying and computing)
Portsmouth offers undergraduate degrees, master's degrees and PhDs, some starting in January, as well as exchanges and study abroad and dual degrees. International College Portsmouth and London Pathway College offer pathway courses for international students. All courses are taught in English; most bachelor's degrees require IELTS 6.0, and pre-sessional English programmes are available. In 2026/27, typical international tuition fees are £17,900 to £20,000 a year, fixed for the length of the course subject to a maximum inflationary rise of 5% a year. The university has halls of residence, and all its Portsmouth buildings are within a 15-minute walk.

Master's and other postgraduate taught courses, postgraduate research degrees and PhDs, offered by the same five faculties as the undergraduate degrees. Some postgraduate courses start in January. Most master's degrees require IELTS 6.5-7.0, with no component below 6.0.
Entry requirements are listed by country on the university's international pages, and applicants can apply directly or through an agent. After receiving an offer, international students pay a deposit, which counts towards tuition fees; once the deposit is paid and the other offer conditions are met, the university issues the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) needed for the Student visa, at the earliest three months before the course starts. Sponsored students, exchange students and US students receiving a Federal/Sallie Mae Direct Loan do not pay the deposit.
All courses are taught in English. Typical IELTS Academic requirements:
- Foundation and pathway courses: IELTS 5.5, no component below 5.5
- Most bachelor's degrees: IELTS 6.0, no component below 5.5
- Most master's degrees: IELTS 6.5-7.0, no component below 6.0
Some courses and PhDs require higher scores. TOEFL iBT is also accepted (institution code 3234). Test results must be no more than two years old at the course start date; IELTS Academic Online and IELTS General Training are not accepted. Pre-sessional English programmes are available.
Typical international tuition fees for the 2026-27 academic year are £17,900 to £20,000 a year, depending on whether the course is classroom- or laboratory-based; the placement year fee is £2,990 to £20,000. The exact fee is on each course page, and EU students have a separate fees and scholarships page. Fees are fixed for the length of the course, subject to conditions and a maximum inflationary rise of 5% a year. Fees for 2027-28 are still to be confirmed. A deposit confirms the place, and students in halls pay a £250 accommodation deposit.
The University of Portsmouth has halls of residence with en-suite rooms and offers a guaranteed room in halls. Friends joining at the same time can ask to be housed together. Many students rent privately, and the accommodation team helps students choose between halls and private renting. All university buildings in Portsmouth are within a 15-minute walk. Students in halls pay a £250 deposit after receiving their accommodation offer.
