The University of South Alabama (USA, also called South) is a public university in Mobile, Alabama, on the US Gulf Coast. Founded in 1963, it enrols more than 13,500 students each year on a 1,200-acre campus and offers more than 115 academic programmes.
Teaching is organised in ten schools and colleges, among them:
- College of Arts and Sciences and the Stokes School of Marine and Environmental Sciences
- College of Engineering and School of Computing
- Mitchell College of Business
- Frederick P. Whiddon College of Medicine, College of Nursing and Pat Capps Covey College of Allied Health Professions
- College of Education and Professional Studies
The Office of International Admissions and Student Programs handles all applications from non-US citizens at undergraduate and graduate level and runs orientation for new international students. Undergraduate applicants need, for example, IELTS 5.5 or TOEFL 61. From Fall 2026, the Global Freshman and Global Transfer Scholars scholarships let selected international students pay in-state tuition. The campus has 55 residence halls in seven residential communities.

- A non-refundable $500 deposit, credited to first-semester tuition, before the I-20 or DS-2019 is issued
- Proof of funds for tuition, living costs and fees for at least one year (F-1 visa)
- A course-by-course credential evaluation (NACES or AICE member) is recommended for foreign transcripts
Minimum scores for undergraduate admission:
- IELTS: 5.5
- TOEFL: 61 (or 3.5 on the 6-point scale)
- Duolingo: 95
- PTE Academic: 44
- iTEP: 3.6
- UK A-level English: grade A, B or C
Unofficial scores are accepted for admission; official scores are needed before enrolment. Citizens or secondary school graduates of exempt English-speaking countries do not need a test.
- Global Freshman Scholars and Global Transfer Scholars Talent and Ability Scholarships (from Fall 2026): competitive merit awards that let selected international students pay in-state tuition; minimum GPA 3.0, renewable while a 3.0 GPA is kept (up to four years for freshmen, two for transfers); priority admission deadlines 15 January and 1 May; not for government-sponsored students
- Several endowed scholarships for international students, applied for through JagSPOT
