The University of Southern Mississippi (Southern Miss) is a university in Hattiesburg, Mississippi (United States), founded in 1910. It teaches more than 13,000 students at its Hattiesburg campus, at the Gulf Park campus in Long Beach, at teaching and research sites on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and online. The university describes itself as a Carnegie R1 research university, and its teams compete in 17 NCAA Division I sports.
Southern Miss offers over 140 undergraduate programmes, grouped by career interest from technology and engineering, business and education to healthcare, sciences, the arts and the social sciences. At graduate level there are master's, specialist and doctoral programmes, including nearly 30 fully online graduate programmes as well as on-campus options in Hattiesburg and Long Beach.
International students are supported by the Center for International Education, which brings together International Student and Scholar Services, international admissions and study abroad. Applications are made online through the university's own application or the Common Application, and applicants from non-English-speaking countries must prove English proficiency. Students can live in one of nine on-campus residence halls.

Admission
International first-year applicants must be at least 17 by the first day of classes; strong applicants have a minimum 2.5 GPA in core academic subjects, and each applicant is evaluated according to their own country's education system. Documents:
- USM Application or Common Application
- US$45 non-refundable application fee
- High school transcripts and/or school leaving examination results
- Proof of English proficiency
- SAT or ACT optional (required for Freshman Merit Scholarship consideration)
Transfer applicants from outside the US also need a course-by-course credential evaluation by a NACES member service.
Language requirements
Applicants from countries other than the UK, Australia, English-speaking Canada, New Zealand, Ireland and the English-speaking Caribbean must submit an English test. Minimum scores:
- TOEFL iBT 71 (old scale) or 4 (new scale)
- IELTS Academic 6.0
- Duolingo 110
- PTE Academic 54
- Cambridge B2 First, C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency
The requirement can be waived, for example, after IB, Cambridge IGCSE/A-Level or an accredited US or Canadian curriculum with at least a C in English.
