Winthrop University is a public, comprehensive, co-educational university in Rock Hill, South Carolina, in the south-eastern United States, 20 minutes south of Charlotte, North Carolina. It was founded in 1886 and awards bachelor's, master's, specialist and doctoral degrees.

Winthrop offers 46 undergraduate majors and a range of graduate programmes, taught on campus, online and in hybrid formats, with a student-to-faculty ratio of 14:1. Students can take part in research, study abroad, performing arts and NCAA Division I athletics.

International applicants apply online and are supported by the International Center. The English requirement is, for example, TOEFL iBT 68 or IELTS 6.0 (no band below 5). Winthrop offers academic and talent scholarships to qualified international students, and citizens of Rhineland-Palatinate, Thuringia and Brandenburg (Germany), Queensland (Australia) and Taiwan pay in-state tuition under sister-state agreements. Students can live in historic residence halls with free laundry and a microfridge in every room, from traditional halls to apartment-style suites.

Admission Requirements

International undergraduates apply online through the admissions portal. Required (sent directly by the issuing body; portal uploads of transcripts are not accepted):

  • Official transcripts, mark sheets and exam certificates in the original language, with certified literal English translations
  • A course-by-course credential evaluation with GPA from a NACES member (e.g. TEC or Josef Silny & Associates)
  • Official proof of English proficiency
  • Non-refundable US$60 application fee and a copy of the passport identity page

SAT/ACT are not required but are recommended for scholarship eligibility.

Language Requirements

Accepted proof of English proficiency includes:

  • TOEFL iBT 68 (paper-based 520)
  • IELTS 6.0, no band below 5
  • Duolingo English Test 95
  • PTE Academic 47 or Oxford ELLT 6
  • ELS level 112, or SAT reading and writing 480 (first-year applicants)

Graduates of English-medium high schools and students from listed English-speaking countries are exempt.

Financial Aid

Winthrop offers no grants or loans to international students, who pay the out-of-state rate, but awards academic and talent scholarships to qualified international students:

  • Freshman academic merit scholarships (SAT/ACT required), assessed automatically at admission
  • Transfer, athletic and talent scholarships, and graduate assistantships
  • International Ambassador Scholarship: US$250 per semester plus an out-of-state grant, for 30 hours of service per semester

Citizens of Rhineland-Palatinate, Thuringia and Brandenburg (Germany), Queensland (Australia) and Taiwan pay in-state tuition under sister-state agreements.

Housing

Residence halls range from Margaret Nance, a traditional first-year hall with hall-style bathrooms, to the suite-style Lee Wicker, Thomson and Phelps halls and The Courtyard, with apartment-style suites of two or four private bedrooms, a kitchen area and a washer and dryer. Utilities, maintenance, meals and laundry are included in room and board, every room has a MicroFridge, and live-in staff support residents.
