Geology Studies in Argentina
Geology in Argentina is taught mainly at public national universities as a five-year licenciatura or as a professional degree that leads to the title of geologist (geólogo). Programmes combine laboratory work with compulsory fieldwork, and teaching is in Spanish.
SpainExchange lists 4 schools in Argentina with geology programmes, all national universities: the Universidad Nacional de Córdoba, the Universidad Nacional de La Plata, the Universidad Nacional de San Luis and the Universidad Nacional del Sur in Bahía Blanca.
How the geology degree is organised
Geology degrees are grado (undergraduate) degrees. Argentine universities describe them by years, subjects and hours, not ECTS credits. Fieldwork, a final project and supervised professional practice are standard parts of the programmes.
At the Universidad Nacional de Córdoba (UNC), the Ciencias Geológicas degree at the Facultad de Ciencias Exactas, Físicas y Naturales leads to the title Geólogo/a. The programme includes 31 curricular subjects (one of them a supervised professional placement), 4 integrated field workshops, 2 electives and a final project. Students must also complete 30 hours in the faculty's student community programme.
At the Universidad Nacional de La Plata (UNLP), the Licenciatura en Geología is taught at the Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Museo. Students need at least twenty field credits, equivalent to 160 hours, a reading level in English or French, a final dissertation (Trabajo Final de Licenciatura) and 50 hours of supervised professional practice.
The Universidad Nacional de San Luis (UNSL) offers a five-year, on-campus Licenciatura en Ciencias Geológicas at its Facultad de Ciencias Físico Matemáticas y Naturales.
Graduates can go on to a doctorate. Under the Higher Education Law (Ley 24.521), postgraduate programmes (specialisation, master's and doctorate) must be accredited by the Comisión Nacional de Evaluación y Acreditación Universitaria (CONEAU). UNSL runs a Doctorado en Ciencias Geológicas and cites a CONEAU resolution for it.
Admission and language
Each university sets its own enrolment period and entry course. At UNLP, enrolment for the 2027 academic year runs from 9 November to 11 December 2026. Applicants whose native language is not Spanish must prove an adequate level of Spanish, for example with the CELU certificate (Lengua y uso). The UNC runs Spanish language and culture courses for international students (PECLA).
A secondary-school certificate from abroad must be legalised or apostilled and recognised in Argentina. Students from countries with an education agreement with Argentina, among them Spain, Mexico, Colombia, Peru, Chile and Italy, convalidate it with the national education authority; the procedure is free.
Foreign students enrolled as regular students at an officially recognised institution can apply to the Dirección Nacional de Migraciones for a temporary student residence. UNLP tells foreign applicants that they need a student visa to enter Argentina.
Costs
Under Ley 24.521, undergraduate studies at state universities are free for Argentine citizens and for foreign nationals with permanent residence. Universities may charge other students for educational services, so international students should check the current rules with each university. UNLP describes itself as a public, free institution with no cap on places.
