Nanzan University

University, Graduate school in Nagoya, Japan

Nanzan University is a Catholic university in Japan. It began in 1946 as a College of Foreign Languages, became a Faculty of Arts and Letters in 1949 and has since grown into a full university. Its motto is Hominis Dignitati, "For Human Dignity". According to the university, it has approximately 10,000 students, including over 300 international students, in 8 undergraduate faculties and 6 graduate schools.

The Center for Japanese Studies (CJS) has taught Japanese as a foreign language for more than 50 years, and students who excel in its programme can be recommended for entry to undergraduate and graduate programmes. Nanzan also offers undergraduate and graduate study for exchange students. International applicants to degree programmes can either sit written exams and an interview at the university or apply with EJU and English test scores through documentary screening.

Full-time international undergraduate and graduate students with Student residence status receive a 50% tuition fee exemption, and various scholarships are available. International students can live in one of four types of university-owned dormitories, such as the Janssen International Residence, or join the homestay programme.

Admission

International applicants to the undergraduate faculties can choose one of two routes, but not both in the same year:

  • University exam route (本学受験型), open to all 8 faculties: written exams and an interview at the university in English and Japanese, plus Mathematics for the Faculty of Science and Technology
  • EJU route (EJU利用型): documentary screening based on the EJU (Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students) and an English proficiency test such as TOEFL or IELTS

Language requirements

For undergraduate admission through the university's own exams, the expected Japanese language level is N1 (N3 for the Faculty of Global Liberal Studies). Applicants through the EJU route need an EJU Japanese score of 270 or higher and the English test scores (such as TOEFL or IELTS) set by the university.

Full-time undergraduate and graduate international students with Student status of residence receive a 50% tuition fee exemption. Various scholarships are also available.
