Arts University Plymouth is an independent, specialist arts university in Plymouth, Devon (England). It was established in 1856 as Plymouth Drawing School and today offers practice-based education in art, design, craft and digital media. Its city-centre campus has more than 13,000 square metres of professional studios and workshops. The university was named Arts University of the Year in the Daily Mail University Guide 2027 and ranked 6th in the UK for student satisfaction in the Complete University Guide 2027.

Admission Requirements

Undergraduate degrees: apply through UCAS (institution code P65); the deadline for most courses is 18:00 GMT on the last Wednesday of January. The university typically asks for 104-120 UCAS points but also considers other qualifications and experience; applicants who meet the requirements are invited to submit a portfolio.

MA programmes: apply directly on the university website. Applicants normally need an undergraduate degree at 2:2 or above, digital images of their work and a personal statement of about 300 words, followed by an interview. International students need a Student Route visa.

Language Requirements

English requirements listed by the university (labelled for 2025/2026 entry):

  • Undergraduate: IELTS 6.0 overall with at least 5.5 in each component; PTE Academic 50 (50 in each section); TOEFL iBT 4 (no element below 3.5)
  • Postgraduate: IELTS 6.5 overall with at least 6 in each component; TOEFL iBT 4.5 (no element below 4)
  • Cambridge C1/C2: 169 overall, no skill below 160

SELT certificates are valid for two years. Pre-sessional English courses are available for applicants who do not yet meet the requirements.

Fees

International tuition fees for 2026/27:

  • BA (Hons) and Extended BA degrees: £17,500 per year
  • Masters degrees: £17,500 per year full-time (1 year) or £9,275 per year part-time (2 years)
  • Foundation Diploma: £12,500 (ten-month course)
  • Extended Diplomas: £12,500 per year

Applicants who need a Student Visa pay a non-refundable deposit of £2,000 before the CAS is issued; the rest is due in full at enrolment, with no instalment plans. Fees exclude pre-sessional English courses.

Financial Aid

Scholarships for international students entering their first year, applied as a fee reduction:

  • Creative Scholarships of up to £2,000, awarded on merit; undergraduate and postgraduate applicants who submit a portfolio are considered automatically
  • Pro-Vice-Chancellor's Creative Excellence Award: £2,500 for a first-year full-time BA (Hons) student (two awards)
  • Vice-Chancellor's Excellence Award: £3,500 for a full-time one-year MA student

Graduates of the university receive a 15% discount on Masters fees.
