Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla, BUAP
University, Graduate school in Puebla, Mexico
The Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla (BUAP) is a public university in Puebla, Mexico, whose roots go back to the 16th century. Its history begins on 9 May 1578, when Jesuits settled in Puebla, and on 15 April 1587 the Colegio del Espíritu Santo was founded; construction of the building now known as the Carolino began around 1670. In 1825 the state congress turned the college into the Colegio del Estado, making it public, secular and free of charge.
The state congress created the Universidad de Puebla in 1937, the university became autonomous by state law in November 1956, and it received the title of "Benemérita" on 2 April 1987. Since 1968 it has also had a Ciudad Universitaria campus in the south of the city. Its first postgraduate studies, a master's and a doctorate in Physics, date from the 1970s.
Today postgraduate studies and research are overseen by a Research and Postgraduate Studies Council, with a directorate of postgraduate studies, a directorate for the internationalisation of research and an International Education Centre (Centro de Educación Internacional). Current calls for postgraduate admission include master's and doctoral programmes in Mathematics and Applied Physics, a doctorate in Data Science Research and a doctorate in Government and Development Sciences.
