About universities in Mexico


The Educational Program in Mexico is controlled and managed by the Secretaría de Educación Pública or Secretariat of Public Education. Higher Education in Mexico follows the education model practiced in the United States and typically comprises;
  • Under graduate studies lasting four years, also known as the Bachelor’s Degree or Licenciatura
  •  Two year long graduate studies or master’s program in Mexico or Maestría
  • Three year Doctorate Degree or Doctorado
New regulations of higher studies in Mexico were implemented in 2005 and under the regulations. The post graduate education in universities in Mexico comprises two principal categories – curriculums for professional development and that for scientific research and development.

Education for professional development

This particular curriculum is also subdivided in another two categories:

A number of Bachelor’s degree programs are offered by individual colleges in Mexico that are scattered over 31 states of the country. There are various types of Bachelor’s courses available in Mexico. This four year course t is the equivalent to undergraduate studies. These courses in colleges and universities Mexico are called Licenciatura.

Especialización: This is a one-year long course that is conducted following the completion of Bachelor’s degree or Licenciatura at colleges in Mexico. It provides a Specialization Diploma or Diploma de Especialización to the students.

Maestría: This is a two year long degree course that can be undertaken after the completion of Bachelor’s degree. On successful completion of the degree, students are awarded the title ‘Master’ or Maestro.

Education for Scientific research & Development

Maestría en Ciencias. This is a 2-year long degree course that can be undertaken after the completion of Bachelor’s Degree. On successful completion of this course, students are handed over the title of ‘Master of Science’ or Maestro en Ciencias.

Doctorado en Ciencias. This course spans three years, and students can undertake doctoral studies upon successful completion of Masters Degree in Mexico Maestría or else Maestría en Ciencias. However, students also have the option of going for a 4-year long degree course straightaway after completing the Bachelor’s Degree, though this is restricted to students who have obtained higher marks. Upon successful completion of this particular course, students are awarded the Doctor of Science or Doctorado en Ciencias title.
 
Eligibility Criteria

For the Bachelor Degree in Mexico, the aspirants are needed to have passed out of high school with the minimum required GPA 2. Applicants need to possess all relevant proofs and documents of qualification.

For the Masters Degree in Mexico, students need to have what is called a baccalaureate degree or something that is equivalent to that.

Students, who are interested in Doctoral curriculums at universities in Mexico, are required to have a Masters degree or something equivalent to it.
