Berea College is a liberal arts college in the small town of Berea, in central Kentucky, about 40 miles south of Lexington, at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. It was founded in 1855 by abolitionists and was the first interracial and coeducational college in the South. It is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges and has more than 1,500 students, of whom about 120 are international students from over 70 countries.
Berea has not charged tuition since 1892 and admits only academically promising students with limited financial resources. All admitted international students receive aid covering 100% of tuition, housing, food and fees. Berea is a federally recognised Work College: every student works at least 10 hours a week in a campus job, and international students can take part without a work permit.
The college offers only undergraduate study, with Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in 33 fields and 39 minors, including business, biology, education, psychology, nursing and sustainability. New international students start only in the fall term and need a TOEFL, IELTS, SAT, ACT or Duolingo score; Berea admits about 40 new international students a year.

Students can also design an Independent Major. International students can join most pre-professional programmes.
International applicants apply through the online portal and must meet university entrance requirements in their own country with strong secondary or leaving exam results, plus a TOEFL, IELTS, SAT, ACT or Duolingo score. The International Admissions Committee reviews academic credentials, financial need, sense of purpose and recommendations; the personal essay carries weight. Bank statements are not needed for the International Financial Questionnaire.
New international students start only in the fall term. Students who already hold a bachelor's degree cannot apply, and places for transfer students are very limited. Admitted students pay a US$2,200 deposit (which can be reduced in cases of need) before the I-20 is issued.
All international applicants must submit one of these scores, with no exceptions (tests older than two years are almost never accepted):
- TOEFL: 68 (internet-based), 190 (computer-based) or 520 (paper-based)
- IELTS: 6 overall, with 5 in each area
- Duolingo: 95
- SAT: 980 combined or ACT: 19 composite
Nursing requires TOEFL iBT 83 with 26 in speaking. There is no ESL programme; on arrival, students take a test that may place them in one ESL course.
Berea charges no tuition. All admitted international students receive financial aid and scholarships covering 100% of tuition, housing, food and fees. Through the Work Program, international students work at least 10 hours a week (most work 15-20 hours and earn over $2,000 during the school year), and summer jobs are available. Every student also receives a laptop at no cost, a $400 professional clothing stipend for juniors and seniors and an average of $4,000 for an internship.
