Murray State University is a public four-year university founded in 1922 in Murray, in western Kentucky, in the United States. It also has regional campuses and online programmes. Nearly 10,000 students from the United States and 50 countries study there, with a student-to-faculty ratio of 17:1.

Its 148 academic programmes, from undergraduate certificates to doctorates, are organised in seven colleges, schools and centres: business (AACSB-accredited since 1976), agriculture, science, engineering and technology, humanities and fine arts, nursing and health sciences, and education and human services, plus the Honors College. International students can also enter through the English Language Program: applicants without the required English score can be admitted conditionally and take ESL classes first. Exchange students and visiting scholars are also accepted.

Academic, athletic and service-based scholarships are open to international students. On campus, students live in eight residence halls organised as residential colleges, each led by a faculty member, or in apartments. The Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area is 20 minutes away.

More information about Graduate Programs

Murray State offers master's and doctoral degrees; each graduate programme has its own admission requirements. Master's degrees require 30 to 36 credit hours. Programmes listed with international per-credit rates include Public Administration, Information Systems and Business Administration. International graduate applicants submit university transcripts, the degree certificate, letters of reference, a statement of purpose and, for some programmes, GMAT or GRE scores.

Admission Requirements

International bachelor's applicants submit the online application ($100; $200 for conditional admission through the ESL programme) and upload:

  • Secondary school transcripts for all years with a minimum GPA of 2.0, with certified translations if not in English
  • Secondary school diploma or graduation certificate
  • Bank statement issued within the last 6 months showing at least $30,706, or a scholarship letter
  • Proof of English proficiency
  • Copy of passport for the applicant and any dependants

Master's applicants must show at least $21,600 and doctoral applicants at least $22,554. Transfer applicants also need university transcripts with a minimum GPA of 2.0.

Language Requirements

Minimum English scores for undergraduate and graduate admission (lower score for admission with condition in brackets):

  • IELTS 6.0 (5.5)
  • TOEFL 71 (61)
  • PTE 51 (45)
  • Duolingo English Test 100 (90)
  • Also accepted: SAT 960, GTEC, TOEIC, Kaplan, Cambridge English B2

Some graduate programmes require higher scores. Students admitted with condition must keep a 2.0 GPA (undergraduate) or 3.0 GPA (graduate) in the first semester. Applicants without a qualifying score can be admitted conditionally and study in the university's ESL programme first; a language test is then used for placement. Students from many English-speaking countries are exempt.
