Western Kentucky University (WKU) is an applied research university in Bowling Green, Kentucky, in the United States, about 110 miles south of Louisville and 65 miles north of Nashville. It also has regional campuses in Elizabethtown/Fort Knox, Glasgow, Owensboro and Somerset, and offers online programmes. WKU is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to award associate, bachelor's, master's, specialist and doctoral degrees.

It offers more than 170 undergraduate programmes and over 100 graduate programmes in five colleges: Education & Behavioral Sciences, Health & Human Services, the Gordon Ford College of Business, Ogden College of Science & Engineering and Potter College of Arts & Letters, plus the Mahurin Honors College. International Admissions & Student Services supports students and scholars from more than 65 countries with admissions, immigration advice and events. Students who need more English can start through the International Pathway to Academic Success (IPAS), a one- or two-semester pathway programme.

International freshmen with an unweighted GPA of at least 3.0 qualify for merit scholarships. Full-time undergraduates live on campus for their first two years.

Admission Requirements

International bachelor's applicants submit:

  • A completed WKU application and a $75 non-refundable fee
  • Official academic records with diplomas and a literal English translation; a minimum GPA of 2.5 for freshmen, or 2.0 for transfers with 24 or more college credit hours
  • Proof of English proficiency
  • Financial evidence of support (a bank statement showing funds for one year, with an Affidavit of Support if it is not the student's own)

Master's applicants submit transcripts showing a completed bachelor's degree with a certified translation, any programme requirements (GRE/GMAT if required) and a $95 fee. Scanned documents are accepted for the admission decision; originals are checked on arrival. All documents and the fee must arrive before a decision is made.

Language Requirements

Minimum English scores (one of the following):

  • Undergraduate: TOEFL iBT 71, IELTS 6.0, PTE Academic 52, Duolingo 100, SAT Evidence-Based Reading & Writing 460, or ELS Level 109
  • Graduate: TOEFL iBT 79, IELTS 6.5 or ELS Level 112

Undergraduates with lower scores can enter the International Pathway to Academic Success (IPAS): a Duolingo score of 100 is required for the one-semester pathway and 90 for the two-semester pathway.

Financial Aid

International freshmen with a minimum unweighted GPA of 3.0 qualify for an Academic Merit Award; no SAT is required, but a complete application package (admission and official secondary school transcript) must be on file. Transfer students and freshmen can apply for further awards through the WKU scholarship portal. Many graduate programmes offer teaching and research assistantships, and departments may have their own funding.

Housing

All full-time undergraduates must live on campus for two years, with some exemptions. WKU Housing & Residence Life offers residence halls, apartments and Living Learning Communities, where students with similar academic or social interests share a floor. Most halls close during Thanksgiving and winter breaks, except Pearce Ford Tower and Center Hall. Campus dining includes vegetarian and halal options, and a free campus bus is available.
