The Università degli Studi del Piemonte Orientale “Amedeo Avogadro” (UPO), known in English as the University of Eastern Piedmont, is a university in the Eastern Piedmont region of Italy, established on 30 July 1998, when it separated from the University of Turin. It is named after the scientist Amedeo Avogadro and is spread across three city campuses in Alessandria, Novara and Vercelli, where the rectorate is based. The university states that it had 17,053 students in April 2026, 1,619 of them international.
Teaching and research are organised in eight departments and a School of Medicine, covering:

- Medicine, health sciences and pharmacy
- Science and technological innovation
- Humanities
- Sustainable development and ecological transition
UPO offers 31 bachelor's degrees (one taught in English), 16 master's degrees (three in English) and 6 PhD programmes. It has more than 200 Erasmus agreements and also accepts Free Mover students. An international office handles incoming students and degree-seeking applicants; students from outside the EU who need a visa apply through the Italian Universitaly portal. Scholarships and student housing are managed by the regional agency EDISU Piemonte.

UPO offers 31 three-year bachelor's degrees (one taught in English) and 6 single-cycle master's degrees. Fields are taught across the departments on the three campuses, including:

- Science and technological innovation (Alessandria)
- Pharmaceutical sciences (Novara)
- Medicine and health professions such as nursing and physiotherapy
- Humanities (Vercelli)

Graduate programmes
At postgraduate level UPO offers 16 master's degrees (three taught in English), 20 first- and second-level university master's programmes (three in English), 6 PhD programmes and 33 specialisation schools, as well as 5 joint or dual degrees. Admission
Applicants from outside the EU who need a student visa submit a pre-enrolment application on the Italian Universitaly portal; for the 2026/2027 academic year the university gives 30 November 2026 as the deadline. Master's programmes have additional procedures set out on each programme's webpage. Documents required:
- Bachelor's: secondary school diploma after at least 12 years of schooling, with a legally certified translation
- Master's: bachelor's diploma and transcript, with a certified translation
- Declaration of Value (DoV), or the CIMEA comparability and verification certificates
- Language certificate (see language requirements)
Original documents must be handed in person to the Student Administration Office to complete enrolment.
Language requirements
Students need a B2 certificate in the language of their programme: Italian for Italian-taught degrees, English for English-taught degrees.
- Italian: CILS, Cert.IT, CVCL, PLIDA or the CISIA test (minimum 48/72); UPO also runs its own Italian tests
- English: for B2, IELTS 5.5-6.5, TOEFL iBT 46-93 or Cambridge First (FCE), among others; Medium of Instruction certificates are also accepted
IELTS Academic Online and PTE Academic Online are not accepted.
Scholarships and financial aid
Scholarships are managed by the regional agency EDISU Piemonte and require a separate application. Students whose income or family are based abroad need an equivalent ISEE (ISEE Parificato), an economic indicator used to obtain reduced tuition fees, apply for scholarships and request accommodation benefits.
Housing
University accommodation is managed by the regional agency EDISU Piemonte and requires a separate application. There are student residences on all three campuses: Casa Sappa (EDISU) and Santa Chiara in Alessandria, EDISU residences in the Perrone complex in Novara, and the Dal Pozzo and Quintino Sella residences in Vercelli.
