The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse (UWL) is a public university in La Crosse, in the Driftless region of western Wisconsin (United States), and part of the Universities of Wisconsin. Its 128-acre campus is surrounded by rivers and bluffs, a short walk from the historic downtown. UWL has 9,675 undergraduate and 947 graduate students from 45 states and 29 countries, with a student-faculty ratio of about 20:1; 98% of new freshmen live on campus.

UWL offers 120 undergraduate programmes, 31 graduate programmes and two doctorates. According to the university, 96% of students take part in at least one high-impact practice, such as undergraduate research or service learning.

International students can apply as undergraduates, graduate students or exchange students, with intakes in the fall and spring semesters. Undergraduate applicants use the online Universities of Wisconsin application ($25 fee) and prove English proficiency, for example with IELTS 6.0 or by completing level 700 at the Wisconsin English as a Second Language Institute (WESLI). Students can also study abroad.

Admission Requirements

International undergraduate applicants submit:

  • The online Universities of Wisconsin application and a non-refundable $25 fee
  • Official, certified or attested transcripts from all secondary and post-secondary schools, with certified English translations
  • Course descriptions for post-secondary study outside the US, for transfer credit
  • Proof of English proficiency
  • Proof of financial support: affidavit of support and a current bank statement of the sponsor
  • Copy of the passport photo page

Supporting documents are sent by email to UWL International Admissions. Applications open on 1 August for fall entry and on 1 April for spring entry, each with a priority deadline. Decisions are mailed about one to two weeks after the file is complete.

Language Requirements

Teaching is in English. Non-native speakers applying for undergraduate study need one of these minimum results:

  • Duolingo English Test: 100
  • PTE Academic: 54
