The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (UW-Whitewater) is a public university in Whitewater, in south-eastern Wisconsin, in the United States, with a second campus in Rock County and online programmes. With more than 12,000 students, it is the third-largest public university in Wisconsin, according to the university. It offers more than 60 majors and 130 minors through colleges of Arts and Communication, Business and Economics, Education and Professional Studies, and Letters and Sciences, and has a student-to-faculty ratio of 21:1.

The School of Graduate Studies offers more than 40 in-person and online master's programmes, graduate certificates and a Doctor of Business Administration through the university's AACSB-accredited business school.

International students can enrol as first-year, transfer, graduate or exchange students, starting in the fall or spring semester. Merit scholarships for international first-year and transfer students range from US$2,000 to US$6,000 per year. The university has a Spanish-language website, more than 10% of its students identify as Latino or Hispanic, and Spanish is its most popular minor. There are 15 residence halls on the Whitewater campus.

Graduate programmes

The School of Graduate Studies offers more than 40 master's programmes in person, hybrid or online, including the MBA, a Master of Science in Applied Kinesiology and a Master of Science in Education in Early Childhood Education Policy, as well as graduate certificates and a Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) through the AACSB-accredited business school.

Admission

International first-year applicants apply online through the Universities of Wisconsin application and submit:

  • An official credential evaluation with GPA from Educational Credential Evaluators, World Education Services or OneEarthEvaluation (in-progress coursework can be considered)
  • One accepted English proficiency score
  • A copy of the passport biographical page
  • Proof of financial support for the I-20, with bank statements issued within the last six months

International students can start only in the fall or spring semester.

Language requirements

Undergraduate applicants submit one of these scores, obtained within the 24 months before applying:

  • TOEFL iBT: 4.0 (71 on the previous scale)
  • IELTS Academic: 6.0
  • Duolingo English Test: 110
  • PTE Academic: 48
  • SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing 430 or ACT English 17 (first-year applicants)
  • IB English A1 or A2 with a grade of 4

Applicants who graduated from a U.S. high school after at least two years, or citizens and residents of listed English-speaking countries, are exempt.

Fees

Estimated direct costs for undergraduate international students in the 2026-27 academic year (fall and spring, 12-18 credits per semester): tuition and fees US$19,756, housing and food US$8,830 and required health insurance US$2,180, for a total of US$30,766, plus about US$3,510 of personal expenses. At the Rock County campus, tuition and fees are US$15,024. Graduate international tuition and fees are US$22,318 for 2026-27.

Scholarships and financial aid

Merit scholarships for new international students (not open to fully sponsored students):

  • First-year: Merit US$2,000, Distinction US$4,000 or Excellence US$6,000 per year, for a high school GPA of 2.5, 3.0 or 3.4; renewable for up to four years
  • Transfer: the same three levels, renewable for up to two years
  • Business and Computer Science International Student Provost Scholarship: US$1,000 per year

Renewal requires a 2.5 GPA and participation in intercultural programmes. F-1 students may work on campus up to 20 hours per week during term.

Housing

The Whitewater campus has 15 student residences, from the high-rise Wells Halls to the Pulliam Hall suites, with 2-person rooms, single rooms, 2-bedroom pods and 4-bedroom suites; more than 4,000 students live on campus. Laundry, printing and the shuttle service are included in housing fees. First-year students are encouraged to join a learning community. Rock County campus students can also live in the Whitewater residence halls, and a free shuttle connects the two campuses.
